PRO-JECTING THE COST OF PROTECTION FROM AIDS,
HEPATITIS B, AND OTHER BLOOD RELATED DISEASES
Introducing the Pro-Ject 200 Reusable Safety Blood
Needle Holder
- The following appeared in the August 4, 1988 issue of the New
England Journal of Medicine.
- "Vacuum tube phlebotomy assemblies accounted for only 5 percent of
needle stick injuries, but the rate per 100,000 items purchased was four times as high as
for disposable syringes. Because the contaminated needle must be unscrewed
from the reusable holder (by hand) it is common practice either to recap
it before disassembly or to
secure the needle with clamps during disassembly."
- The authors conclude their study with this statement:
- "The current climate of concern has resulted in a demand for
a safer work environment; this may be viewed as a historic
opportunity to accelerate the transfer of new technology into the
workplace. A timely and fast response to this opportunity can bring about
substantial and lasting improvements in an area where progress is long
overdue."
- Health care providers have attacked this problem with increased
training, but have found that product design is both the problem and
the solution.
- Some facilities dispose of their reusable blood needle
assemblies after each procedure to avoid needle sticks. However,
the cost of the reusable holder plus the cost of disposing of them
in approved containers is approximately $.13 - $.14 per procedure.
- Other facilities have chosen to use single-use disposable needle
holders which costs even more, are larger and have a cost-of
disposal - approximately $.21 - $.37 per procedure.
- IDC Medical is offering the Pro-Ject 200 as a COST
EFFICIENT SOLUTION to this serious problem. Our product is REUSABLE
and the cost can be as low as 2c PER PROCEDURE.
- We believe that by making the cost of protection reasonable, it can
be available to everyone.
